Who we are

Não Bata, Eduque is a network of institutions and individuals that works as social movement. It aims at eradicating all kinds of corporal and humiliating punishment of children by promoting respectful relationships within the family, that guarantees children’s rights to corporal and psychological integrity as well as their development as human beings and citizens. The network currently counts on approximately 200 members and a managing group, responsible for coordinating the implementation of the network’s strategies of action.

The eradication of corporal and humiliating punishment within families, schools and communities.

Our goals

  1. To influence public opinion with campaigns and programs created for parents and care-takers, focusing on children’s education based on dialogue, comprehension and affection.
  2. To influence the elaboration of public policies and legal norms aimed at protecting children’s and adolescent’s rights.
  3. To promote the participation of children and adolescents in the network’s actions; to bring public attention to the importance of creating or improving formal and informal support bases that help families raise and educate their children.
  4. To establish the main bases for a long-term campaign focusing on partnerships with public institutions, organizations from the civil society and the private sector.

Axes of action

  1. Social mobilization
    Contributing to strengthen a national movement for the eradication of corporal and humiliating punishment.
  1. Social advocacy
    Influencing the elaboration of public policies and determining a political strategy to promote legal reform and, as a consequence, the recognition that corporal punishment constitutes a form of violence against children.
  1. Social pedagogy
    Investing in the education of different segments and social actors.
  1. Social Promotion
    Developing and promoting campaigns for sensitization and information

What constitutes corporal and humiliating punishment?

All forms of violence inflicted by adults upon children with disciplinary purposes, causing physical or emotional pain to the child or adolescent. Corporal and physical forms of punishment are a violation of children’s rights to dignity and physical integrity.

 

Corporal and humiliating forms of punishment may include:

 
  • Spanking
  • Pinching
  • Hitting in the hands
  • Grabbing the hair
  • Rejection
  • Humiliation
  • Threats
  • Using the child to mutual disqualification by parents going through a separation
  • Pushing
  • Forcing the child to stay in painful or shameful positions
  • Punching
  • Shaking
